Share article 36 One day after enduring a concerning velocity drop that forced him out of his start against the New York Mets, the Atlanta Braves announced on Saturday that right-hander Spencer Strider was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
The Braves also announced that catcher Drake Baldwin will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Gwinnett. Baldwin, who had gotten off to a strong start, has been sidelined since May 19 with a right oblique strain.
The team had initially termed Strider’s issue on Friday as right elbow and shoulder soreness, with manager Walt Weiss later revealing that the pitcher was likely to undergo an MRI.
In what became a 7-5 loss to the Mets, Strider’s fastball was averaging 93 mph before it suddenly dropped to 86-87 mph during the fourth inning. He left with a trainer after throwing his 68th pitch. In three-plus innings, Strider gave up seven runs and surrendered three home runs, including two from Bo Bichette.
Strider missed the 2024 season with right elbow surgery to repair his UCL and had Tommy John surgery in 2019 as a sophomore at Clemson. After Friday’s outing, the 27-year-old’s ERA rose from 4.00 to 5.31.
With Strider on the IL, the Braves recalled right-hander Anthony Molina.
